1. Materiales / Materials

Parte de los terciados y el aglomerado para la "columna vertebral". / Part of the plywood and the chipboard for the "backbone".

El resto de los 49 terciados y primera parte de los 780 metros lineales de madera. Hay que cuidar la forma de guardar la madera y los terciados para que no curven. / The rest of the 49 sheets of plywood and the first part of the 780 linear metres of wood. Attention must be paid to the way the wood and the plywood is kept, to avoid bending.

Dos de las maderas utilizadas:
1) Pino Hemlock, (en los travesaños),
2) Cedro (en todos los marcos, apoyos de los pisos y asientos, serretas, y casi todo lo demás). / Two of the types of wood used:
1) Hemlock Pine, (on the beams),
2) Cedar (on every frame, sole and seat bearers, stringers, and almost everything else).

Los elementos de fijación (que refuerzan cualquier cosa que vaya pegada con resina epóxica): tornillos de acero inoxidable con cabeza Phillips y clavos de bronce-silicona "Gripfast" (o "Titalock"). Estos últimos, se conseguían al mejor precio en Australia, en "BoatCraft Pacific", (donde unos 5000 clavos costaban menos de U$S 100).
La ventaja de usar clavos para fijar los terciados es la velocidad y facilidad en su colocación y el menor peso. A este tipo de clavos cuesta más clavarlo, pero fija mucho más y no se oxida. / The fastenings (which reinforce anything that goes glued with epoxy resin): stainless steel screws with Phillips head, silicon-bronze nails ("Gripfast" or "Titalock"). These could be bought at a better price in Australia, at "BoatCraft Pacific", (where some 5000 nails would cost less than U$S 100).

2. Herramientas / Tools

Primero la seguridad: siempre use guantes, anteojos, máscara y sombrero: sus dedos, ojos, pulmones y pelo se lo agradecerán. / Safety first: always use gloves, glasses, mask and hat: your fingers, eyes, lungs and hair will be grateful.

Herramientas imprescindibles: lijadora roto-orbital, lijadora de banda, caladora y taladro-atornillador inalámbrico. / Essential tools: random orbit palm sander, belt sander, jig saw, cordless screwdriver.

Una buena manera de tener la llave de ajuste siempre a mano.. / A good way to kepp the adjusting key always handy.

Otras herramientas que facilitan mucho el trabajo: sierra circular y cepillo eléctrico. / Other tools that make work much easier: circular saw and electric planer.

Juego de espátulas para trabajar con la resina epóxica en gel. Las dos de la derecha fueron modificadas para realizar los "fillets". / Scraper kit for working with epoxy resin gel. The two of the right were modified for making fillets.

The fillet is a filling with epoxy resin gel of an angle between two pieces of plywood or wood, which will be joined.

La resina epóxica en gel ("picote en gel") y las tablas y espátulas en donde se prepara. / The epoxy resin gel and the board and scraper where it is prepaired.

Otra herramienta sumamente útil es un perfil metálico totalmetne recto. Se usa permanentemente para verificar la alineación de piezas. / Another very useful tool is a completely straight metal bar, in this case, in aluminium. It is used very often to check if parts are lined-up.

3. "Técnica del Puzzle" / "The Puzzle Technique"

Temprano al amanecer, comienza el trabajo. / Early at dawn, the work starts.

Como algunos mamparos son más grandes que los terciados de 2,20 x 1,60 m, de los que disponíamos, (en Inglaterra son de 2,44 x 1,22 m), con la "técnica del puzzle" (o "del festoneado", que nos enseñó Alejandro Álvarez de Toledo), agregamos los 25 cm que nos faltaban, antes de dibujar o cortar los mamparos. Aquí se ve como se cortaron simultáneamente, con la caladora (encimados), los dos terciados a unir. / As some bulkheads are bigger than the plywood sheets we had (2,20 x 1,60 m, instead of the 2, 44 x 1,22 m ones they have in Europe), with the puzzle technique (or scalloping technique) that Alejandro Álvarz de Toledo tought us, we added the missing 25 cm, before drawing and cutting the bulkheads. Here you can see how the two pieces to be joined  were simultaneously cut with the jig saw (one over the other).

    Dos terciados (con sus respectivos "puzzles" agregados y presentados), antes de ser pegados. Las juntas de los terciados son encolados sobre fórmica (blanca en la foto) y luego prensados con otro pedazo de fórmica encima, (para evitar que se peguen a los objetos que los prensan). La luz que se ve entre los terciados es rellenada con el gel epóxico, (pero antes se achica aproximando las piezas). / Two pieces of ply (each with it's puzzle added), before being glued over Formica (white), and pressed with Formica, to avoid being glued to the objects used to press it. The space between the pieces is filled with the epoxy gel (but before, is narrowed by aproaching the pieces).

Preparación de la resina epóxica en gel. Uno de los componentes se ve como una pelota dorada en la espátula, antes de ser mezclada con la otra parte más blanca. / Epoxy resin gel preparation. One of the components is seen as a golden ball on the scraper, before being mixed with the other, whiter one.

El mamparo ya tiene el agregado. / The bulkhead has it's addition.

4. Técnica del Solapado / The Scarphing Technique

Otra opción para unir terciados es la técnica del solapado ("scarphing"). Para ello se prensan ajustadamente los listones a empalmar, sobre una base firme. Al comienzo se usa cepillo de carpintero (manual o eléctrico). / Other option for joining pieces of plywood is the scarphing technique. For doing this, the planks to join must be firmly pressed over a firm base. At the beginning a planer (manual or electrical) can be used.

Después se sigue con esta herramienta construida por recomendación del diseñador naval Horacio Ezcurra, con la que se logra un lijado parejo y eficaz. / Afterwards, you can follow with this tool, made by suggestion of naval designer Horacio Ezcurra, which allows to achieve a very even and effective sanding.

El trabajo ya comenzado. / The work is started.

Finalizado el lijado, a punto de encolar. / Sanding finished, ready to glue.

Una vez curada resina epóxica de alta viscosidad (mezclada con aserrín fino), el empalme está terminado. Las flechas muestran el lugar del encolado. De esta forma, con cuatro tablas cortadas de un terciado, se hacen 8,80 mts. de quilla interna. / Once the high viscosity epoxy resin (mixed with some fine sawdust) is cured, the joining is finished. The arrows show the place of the joint. In this fashion, the four planks of plywood become the 8,80 mts. of inner keel.
