recortadas.

Como el casco es simétrico, cada cuaderna tiene una gemela en el otro
extremo. Para simplificar, cuando se les da forma y se lijan, las gemelas se
atornillan temporariamente para que queden idénticas. /
As the boat is symmetrical, each bulkhead has a twin one on the other end.
For convenience when sanding and shaping, twins are temporarily screwed
together, so the are identical.

En un banco metálico construido a tal efecto, se montan las cuadernas
con prensas, y se verifica la posición con un piolín. Una vez alineadas, se
atornillan sobre escuadras soldadas al banco. / In
an especially built metal bench, the bulkheads are mounted with presses and
their position verified with a string.

Se coloca una "columna vertebral", para que quede un molde estable para
la colocación de las tiras de cedro. Una vez alineadas las cuadernas, se
atornillan sobre escuadras soldadas al banco. / A "backbone"
is mounted, to guarantee a solid mold for mounting the cedar strips. Once in
the right positioan, the bulkheads are screwed to metal squares welded to
the bench.

Se cubre el molde con cinta, en aquellos lugares donde puede entrar en
contacto con la resina epóxica. Así se evita que las tiras de cedro queden
pegadas al molde. / The mould is covered with tape
where it can contact the epoxy resin. This is to avoid the cedar from
getting glued to the mould.

Las tracas de cedro deben ser empalmadas para alcanzar los
5,4 mts. de eslora. / The cedar planks must be
scarphed to reach the total length of 5,4 mts. (18 feet).

Para ello se usa pistola de cola caliente. / A
hot glue gun is used por this.

Otra forma de empalmar tracas, más rápida y práctica: con un taco del lado de
adentro. / Another way of joining planks, faster
and practical: with a buttblock on the inside.

Después de probar todos las formas de empalmar tracas, esta fue la
mejor: encolando y clavando las dos partes sobre una cuaderna (bajo la cinta
plástica amarilla). / After trying every way of
joining planks, this was the best one: glueing and nailing the two pieces to
a bulkhead (under the yellow plastic tape).

Para pegar, se usa la resina epóxica en gel ("picote en gel").
Se ven también las tablas y
espátulas en donde se prepara. / As glue, the epoxy resin
gel is used. Also seen is the boards and scrapers where it is prepaired.

Se fabrican unas "mariposas" para facilitar el retiro de los clavos que
sostendrán las tiras de cedro en su lugar hasta que cure la resina. /
Some "butterflies" are made, to help the removal of the nails which hold the
cedar strips on place until the resin cures.

Se empieza el "forrado en tiras". / Strip planking is started.
|
 |
Al final, los clavos a medio clavar, sin las mariposas, resultaron lo
más eficaz. / In the end, nails half way in,
without the "butterflies", were more efficient.

than 760 nails were needed!

Una vez curada la resina, se abre el casco como un libro, para retirar
la "columna vertebral" temporaria (flecha). / Once
the resin is cured, the hull is opened like a book, to remove the temporary
"backbone" (arrow).

Aprovechamos la facilidad para trabajar con el casco abierto, para
emprolijar la cara interna del forro. / We take
advantage of the easiness of working with the hull open, to tidy up the
planking's inner face.

Una vez vueltos a unir las dos mitades del casco, se comienza el lijado. /
Once both hull halves are joined again, we started sanding.

Tras cuatro largas sesiones de lijado, así quedó el casco. /
After four long sanding sessions, this is how the hull
looks.

Finalmente, el casco laminado. / Finally, the
hull sheathed.

Esta resultó la mejor herramienta para eliminar el exceso de resina
epóxica, cuando aún no está totalmente curada. /
This turned out to be the best tool to remove the excess of epoxy resin,
when it's not yet completely cured.
